Crusts- The layers of fashion
‘Crusts’ allows the self similar embroidery patterns, patch
work, tie and dye, hand paintings and batik patterns grow organically,
following an instinctive rhythm, spreading over the surface of these garments,
organically, in the process of creation.
As a self expression, ‘Crusts’ is a journey that goes
through various experiences- all indigenous ones, from the festivals to the
temples to the home to the streets to the market to the city to the village.
Frescoes on the walls of the temple and home and on the street inspire ‘Crusts’
only to be materialized on malmal, a
variety of muslin. Processes such as tie and dye, hand painting and batik signify
the layers of time, stories, memories and nostalgia that each day (month, year,
years, decades, centuries, era) brings with it.
Surface Ornamentation- embroidery, hand painting and patch
work, is not merely an ornamentation, it is an expression of the beauty and
timelessness of the repository of man’s material culture and a tribute to the
aesthetic standards or as an evidence of past civilizations.
Finally, ‘Crusts’ is an ode to the identity- the pehchan for the handmade, that has
helped determine the ebb and flow of human destiny.
