The old and medieval cities that co-exist with their modern counterparts are living testimonials of organic growth, transformation, albeit with constant changing notions of the community space, public space, residential and commercial space within the confines of a neighborhood, a street, a nukkad, a square.

Like these old cities, any interior space- a living space- is an agglomeration of different lifestyles, each emerging from individual histories and assuming a different character each time, it interacts with the individuals that inhabit it.

It seems that with globalization, homogenization and the sake of financial gains, local and individual histories get sacrificed.
But do they? No!
The pace and nature of living and being- the innate growth- however anonymous, the tendency and potency to become an unconscious, non-intrusive space is a means to reclaim its identity, its freedom, its existence.

So is this applicable to a household, or for that matter, to a building or a complex? AND HOW?

How does it reflect in DESIGN? What is the role of a designer, who has to reconsider the space and the beings and their actions that manipulate it, while designing?

Generative systems offer a methodology and philosophy that view the space in the place in terms of dynamic processes and their outcomes. In the terminology of Thomas Kuhn (Kuhn 1996), it offers a paradigm shift for the process of design and the expression of that process. Thus a designer conceptualizes not for the objects and the space only, but envisages interacting components, systems and processes, which in turn generate new spaces and artifacts, with special properties and characteristics.

This kind of intervention enables the designer to create and modify rules or systems that interact to generate the emergent design autonomously- without weakening its capacity for representational values, at the same time. Thus, the ‘art’ of designing in this mode is in mastering the relation between process specification, environment, and generated space design. A designer employing these methods assumes the role of shaping the constraints on the dynamic process and its behavior. S/ He ain’t just a creator of products and spaces, s/ he becomes a behavioral analyst, aiding in the co-creation of ‘sense’ that is open ended at the same time. Therefore, the potential of the space is revealed by the curiosity, creativity and participation of the user.
